question 2 evaluation
Question 2 Evaluation
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
A lot of magazines target either a certain genre, social group or stereotype. For example, Kerrang is mainly rock music based; therefore its target audience will be a teenage generation and listen to rock music. Another example would be the NME music magazine. It mainly focuses on indie rock music, focusing on fans who enjoy that genre of music and the bands they interview inside of the magazine.
My magazines target audience was a twenty to forty year old man music magazine, mainly for men, influence by the GQ Men’s Magazine and the Q Music Magazine. The layout is very simple and the main content would be the in depth interviews and information within the magazine that would attract my target audience. The higher intellectual skills are needed, as it is mainly a text-based magazine with few photos. Therefore younger audience may not be interested in reading so much content.
The images in my magazine are easy to look at and show you exactly who is in an interview. For example my front cover is basic, the image has not got much to it, a man dressed formally looking smart, in a way that can appeal to my target audience. Not fashion conscious but still stylish at the same time. Telling the audience who the magazine will be based on and also not being over powered by the information surrounding it.
My double page spread has my model dressed in the same clothing as in the front cover, the clothing is very formal again, which can appeal to any audience, wearing a shirt, tie and carrying a suit jacket. By doing this it makes the model look smart, intelligent and successful. The lack of mise-en-scene around my model and the photo in general keeps it very basic, very easy to look at and a way I believe appeals to my target audience, representing the group of 20 to forty year olds.
My contents page also is a very simple image, very similar to the image on the front cover and the double page spread creating a synergy between the images, the theme stays consistent through the magazine, this will not challenge my target audience. Therefore making the magazine completely targeted towards the twenty to forty year old audience. With less posters, advertisement, images and images that are full of different messages and symbols. Making the written content the main source of information and the main basis of the magazine. Targeting an intellectual reader, rather than a teenager wanting to look at their favorite pop star.
The representation I offer does not challenge dominant ideas about the social group I have targeted. My magazine is a men’s music magazine, interviewing all genres of music and superstars getting a real in depth guide in the interviews to what is going on in the life of the artists and their music. The images, layout and inside content represents that particular social group. The content is to the point, detailed and informative, the images are simple and do not over power or make up the main basis of the magazine.
I have done nothing to challenge the target audience or try and approach them differently, I have used what I believe are the best ways to represent the certain social group without any stereotyping.
question one evalutation
My product uses standard forms of production; it is very similar to other men’s music magazines such as Q and another men’s fashion magazine GQ. The reason for this is my interest in both magazines, they are successful men’s magazines and the genre is something that appeals to me, and the target audience I was trying to reach, which was the 20 to fifty year old man. Everything from font, layout, photos and color is basic. Nothing to outstanding, a magazine that won’t necessarily catch the eye of a shopper without any knowledge of magazines, but to the audience it has already reached or reaches customers with the stories, information and genre of magazine.
Front cover
The style of my front cover is very similar to a standard issue of GQ magazine, it isn’t a music magazine itself, but it interviews artists and is very similar to the Q magazine. Which is what my front cover is also very too.
Both magazines have a very basic lay out’ even though Q uses red which is a very outstanding color the basis of the front cover is simple. The images on the front cover are slightly to the left of the page with the information and content within the magazine to the right. Giving you a clear view of the main body image.
The images used on the front cover, double page spread and contents are very similar to those of a Q and Gq magazine, they get very close to the person in the photo, each picture quite similar to the other and simple. But they show you who is being interviewed and give the audience a clear understanding as to who that is. The standard forms of production are displayed like a conventional magazine, close up front cover, and the other images consist of close ups and mid shots.
Double page spread
My double page spread displays standard forms of production in the fact that its content is very descriptive and the images don’t over power the written content, this again is very similar to the layout of a conventional Q Music Magazine and GQ music magazine. The writing is very in depth and the images do not take up a large amount of the double page spread. His doesn’t challenge the conventional methods of a double page spread. It just uses them; the simple way is how I felt would best attract my target audience.
Contents
My contents page challenges conventional forms of contents pages on your average music magazine. Compared to Qs magazine it is very basic, plain and much easier to read, there is a lack of color and decoration to my front cover unlike the Q magazine front cover. But for my target audience I felt even though it may be challenging conventional styles, it is easy to read which is what I want. The audience is going to be more interested in the written content rather than the images and photography.
